Mickey G's
Profile
Now
in my thirties, plus ten...
In my teens, like many others, I used to listen to Greg Edwards on a Friday
night and JFM (the pirate station) on a Sunday. I was not old enough to go
to clubs, so had to listen on the radio instead. I persuaded my father to
take me to Tottenham Court Road to buy me a mixer, which was very basic with
no cross fade. My first turntables were belt driven, different makes and a
nightmare to work with, but a good grounding to start bedroom mixing. Pocket
money was spent on 12" records, my first 12" purchase was Vicky
D This Beat Is Mine on Import (Sam Records). The mixer and decks meant that
I could DJ at house parties and that's where it all started.
I started clubbing as soon as I could drive, hop into the Ford Capri and we
were off up to town. I remember going to see Steve Walsh in Peckham, Robbie
Vincent in Camberley and Norman Jay in Camden. Heading out to Caister for
the soul weekenders. From these early days of what I would describe as pure
soul music we drifted into another scene, with DJs like Giles Peterson , Bob
Jones and Kevin Beadle introducing us to Jazz and rare groove. Clubs like
the Special Branch playing a mixture of hip hop, rare groove and Northern
soul. Chris Brown at the Belverdere in Ascot on a Sunday lunch time then down
to the Belvedere in Richmond for some Jazz in the evening. Good times that
certainly expanded my mind as far as music was concerned.
Then came House music, I was doing a residency at the time where I played
soul and rare groove but the crowd did not want this anymore so I made the
change to house music.
I have a large collection of vinyl, switched to CDs a few years back and am
now being forced into digital music. I am not big on technology so MP3 and
wav files are all new to me! I still love the feel of vinyl and much prefer
to use it when DJing.
I like to listen to Ralph Tee, Richard Searling and Robbie Vincent and when
I found the vinyl morpher web site I felt right at home immediately. Like
minded people playing quality soul music. I wanted to be a part of it!
So into web based music stations, this is the way forward, so I am told. I
am very pleased to be a part of this revolution and it's great to trawl through
my collection and present a show. I hope you like my choice in music and please
email with any suggestions for the show.
